Three Chord Backstage Series: Black Stone Cherry is a highly drinkable whiskey based on a fun concept that is more likely to draw existing fans of the band than new whiskey drinkers.

Musician Neil Giraldo founded Three Chord Bourbon, and the company’s Backstage Series takes his background and fuses whiskey with music. According to the company, the series brings together iconic bands with each of their unique bourbon blends in bottles adorned with the band’s artwork. First released in 2023, their 2024 follow-up includes 11 new release.

Black Stone Cherry is an American rock band that was formed in Kentucky in 2001. The band members include Chris Robertson, Ben Wells, John Fred Young, and Steve Jewell, who replaced Jon Lawhon on bass in 2021. Jeffrey Boggs joins the band on tours.

The whiskey is an easy-drinking affair that’s immediately likable. It has hints of dark fruits throughout, with cherry being most prominent. Caramel and cinnamon join on the nose, followed by allspice and reinforced caramel and cherry on the mellow palate. Baking spices, toasted oak, and brown sugar round it out.

The label artwork and collaboration concept certainly draws you into this whiskey. It strikes a nice balance between slight uniqueness and affordability, but surprisingly, drinkability is its most prominent characteristic. Fans of the band should be sure to pick up a bottle, however ultimately the whiskey’s overall mellow nature precludes it from being memorable based on taste alone.
