Peated Cask will please those who enjoy a light, malt-forward peated whiskey, and ultimately shows promise for what is yet to come with more age.
Talnua differentiates itself in the American whiskey space by producing single pot still American whiskey. In the world of Irish whiskey, a single pot still whiskey means that the whiskey is distilled in a pot still by a single distillery from a mixed mash of malted and unmalted barley. Talnua uses the same 50% unmalted barley, 50% malted barley mashbill for all of their whiskeys.
Peated Cask starts out as Talnua’s Single Pot Still Whiskey, which is then harvested and finished in used Peated whiskey casks. Not surprisingly, peat flavor weaves its way throughout, which sets up well atop the whiskey’s malty undertone. I don’t typically gravitate toward peated whiskeys, and for me, a little peat goes a long way. Partially due to the proof, but also likely due in part to its overall production process, Talnua Peated Cask is light and approachable all around, delivering enough flavor to not feel watered down. At the same time, it’s arguably a bit too malt-forward, which more time aging in barrels could tame and add more depth. Peated Cask will please those who enjoy a light, malt-forward peated whiskey, and ultimately shows promise for what is yet to come with more age.
