Imploring a “solera-inspired” continuum cask adds some well-rounded notes that translate into an approachable American-made whiskey.
Talnua Distillery opened its doors in 2019 in Denver, Colorado by husband and wife team Patrick and Meagan Miller. Heavily influenced by their Irish ancestry, the company states that the distillery’s name “is born of the Irish-Gaelic words ‘Talamh’, meaning ‘Land’, and ‘Nua’, meaning ‘New’.” Their Heritage Collection is billed as an American single pot still whiskey.
Talnua’s Continuum Cask Whiskey implores a “solera-inspired” process. Aged for a minimum of 18 months in virgin white oak casks, it then gets vatted into the company’s large continuum cask. As Talnua pulls from the cask, an equal amount of whiskey replaces it. Comparing this Continuum Cask release to the company’s standard Virgin White Oak Cask Whiskey shows how much more intriguing the continuum cask makes the whiskey. It’s not a radical change mind you, but it does make for a more interesting pour. At $25 less but at the cost of age, it's a fair tradeoff.
Like Talnua’s Virgin White Oak Cask Whiskey, this is a very approachable malt-adjacent whiskey. It’s all around crisp, backseating its malty notes for more citrus, toasted oak, and almond. While the continuum cask isn’t necessarily adding complexity, it does add a more well rounded base. Its 86 proof may be an issue for some, but I can see why they landed at this proof point. It makes this an easy sipper and having tasted their bottled-in-bond release, I’d say the addition of proof points doesn’t make for a dramatically better sip based on proof alone.
