Old Forester 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof is a rich and controlled 130 proof bourbon that leans heavily on bold barrel flavors, while largely omitting the brand's typical fruit notes.
This Old Forester 117 Series release pays respect to the 130 proof Old Forester bourbon that was distilled during the 100-day distiller's holiday a few years prior to the repeal of Prohibition. Though this release is bottled at 130 proof, Old Forester makes no mention of whether it was also distilled to 130 proof.
Prohibition Era Still Proof is a big-tasting Old Forester bourbon. At 130 proof, it comes with a thick mouthfeel that coats your mouth with rich barrel flavors. The bourbon is mostly void of typical Old Forester fruit notes, and doubles down on cinnamon, oak, molasses, cocoa, and maple. There are fleeting moments of slightly burnt banana bread and stewed apples in the palate, and plenty of toasted flavors at the start of the finish.
It only takes a small sip to know that Old Forester 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof brings it right from the start. It’s rich without being overly hot, and nicely feathers all of its flavors in a very controlled manner. Though I miss some of Old Forester’s typical red fruit notes, there's enough going on with this bourbon’s sips to make up for it.
