Three years after its initial release, Old Forester The 117 Series: 1910 Extra Old is back with a pleasing double-oaked bourbon that fans of Old Forester will appreciate.
Old Forester The 117 Series Extra Old was initially released in February 2022 in the now long-running Old Forester 117 Series. Old Forester Extra Old is created by taking Old Forester’s standard 1910 Old Fine Whiskey and aging it for an extra 18 months in a secondary barrel. This extra aging affords the bourbon its name, “Extra Old.”
Much like its first go around in 2022, this year's release of 1910 Extra Old pulls in many of the flavors found in standard 1910 Old Fine Whiskey, with a clear influence from being double-barreled. The nose is incredibly pleasing, delivering a plethora of scents that play well together and make you linger with each inhale. The palate and finish hone in on aged oak and rye spice, with leather and brown sugar providing subtle depth. Its sub-100 proof is more noticeable in the palate, with a thinner mouthfeel present, which adds to the mellowness of the finish.
Fans of standard 1910 Old Fine Whiskey will be right at home with this release and appreciate the additional depth that the longer aging in a secondary barrel provides. For all of the focus on double barrel whiskeys lately, this one works very well in highlighting the impact of utilizing a secondary barrel to change the flavor profile in a subtle way. It’s a shame this isn’t an ongoing yearly limited release that is more widely available for fans of Old Forester or fans of double barrel bourbon in general to experience.
