A slight tweak of the standard Old Forester mashbill, along with a double-digit age statement, results in an Old Forester bourbon that stands out in their current lineup.
Old Forester 1924 10-Year-Old is an annual limited edition bourbon. It was released in 2024 for the first time and follows 1870 Original Batch (2014), 1897 Bottled in Bond (2015), 1910 Old Fine Whisky (2018), and 1920 Prohibition Style (2017). Old Forester 1924 features a unique mashbill: 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley, versus the standard Old Forester recipe of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. The brand states that “When 1924 was first released last year in January 2024, it celebrated and honored the 100th anniversary of whiskey innovation as Old Forester is the only bourbon brand produced before, during, and after Prohibition.”
According to Old Forester, “During Prohibition, more than 200 distilleries in Kentucky alone were forced to close. Old Forester, however, continued operations because the federal government issued it one of six permits to bottle existing whiskey stocks as medicine. In 1924, Old Forester acquired barrels from closed distillers, with different mashbills, and bottled that liquid as Old Forester.”
The bourbon delivers a great opening thanks to its rich nose that is full of pleasing scents. Noticeable cereal grains and toasted oak are joined with sweeter scents that play off each other nicely. The sweetness flows into the midpoint but is tempered down thanks to its extended time in the barrel and brings in a variety of spices, including an unusual honey-spiced orange note, which adds intrigue. Ending on drier spiced notes, the bourbon provides a lingering chewy finish that has you smacking your lips to keep it going.
Old Forester 1924 10-Year-Old provides a nice deviation from the standard Old Forester lineup. Not only does it carry a double-digit age statement, but the slight tweak in its mashbill results in a familiar yet different whiskey. It’s on the pricier side for a 10 year old bourbon, but the sip delivered lives up to its cost of admission and will have fans of the brand wishing this was a year-round release.
