Combining a whopping 11 distilleries into a single blend, Lost Lantern American Vatted Malt Remix is an American single malt through and through, trading wild flavors for overall balance.
Lost Lantern American Vatted Malt Remix is part of Lost Lantern’s Fall 2025 Collection, which they refer to as the “Scotch Lover’s Collection” as it takes a “deep dive into the more traditional side of American single malt.” Dubbed “AVM-2,” American Vatted Malt Remix is the second vatted malt Lost Lantern has produced, following Edition No. 1, which was released in October 2020. Vatted Malt Remix adds five additional distillery sources to the last of the original vatted mix of Edition No. 1 that the company had. The end result is that it nearly doubles Edition No. 1’s source list from the original six to a whopping eleven distilleries. Lost Lantern does a tremendous job of deep-diving into the details of each component, which can be found on the specific product page of their website.
Surprisingly, Vatted Malt Remix is not the kitchen sink flavor dump you might expect; instead, it delivers a cohesive, albeit nuanced, blend. As we have seen with many of these multiple-component blends, the inclusion of many components sometimes has the opposite effect, as rather than touching the extremes of flavors, they are instead more balanced. Some of the more wild flavors found in the sourced whiskeys, which can be tasted through Lost Lantern’s single cask releases and directly via the distillery-branded releases, are tempered against their counterparts, all of which makes for a more complex and nuanced pour.
The blend is certainly malt-forward, featuring malt-steeped tea, herbal notes, smoke, mesquite wood, and a hint of Frosted Flakes cereal in the mix. However, it also incorporates more traditional flavors, including baking spices, caramel, pie crust, and brown sugar. As with the majority of American single malts, Vatted Malt Remix’s flavor profile is clearly geared towards a more adventurous audience, or maybe simply to those who typically reach for a scotch, as the company’s aptly named “Scotch Lover’s Collection” clearly points out.
Lost Lantern American Vatted Malt Remix (AVM-2) is a 800 bottle release.
