Highlighting the first triple-distilled whiskey that Lost Lantern has released, 2023 Single Cask #15 by Andalusia Whiskey Co. showcases a unique single malt whiskey that produces an unusual yet exciting flavor profile.
Andalusia Whiskey Co. is a small distillery in Blanco, Texas. According to the company founders, “While brainstorming possible names for the distillery, we came across some old papers that showed that the land where we were building was once called Andalusia Ranches.” The distillery is very small and produces a limited number of whiskeys. Usually only sold in Texas, their whiskey is typically bottled at 100 proof, and made from 100% malted barley. Lost Lantern has highlighted them here, by bottling a triple-distilled whiskey as Single Cask #15 in their Fall 2023 Single Cask Collection. The total yield for this barrel was 177 bottles.
This is an interesting whiskey from start to finish. It has a richer flavor than a lot of other single malts. It’s grain-forward, highlighting the whiskey’s underlying 100% Texas single malt mashbill. The whiskey was triple distilled on a 100% copper pot still, and then the distillate entered the barrel at 105 proof. Surprisingly, (for a Texas whiskey) it gained only 0.2 proof points over its 3 years in the barrel. While it won’t be for everyone as some may find issues with this whiskey’s grain-forward flavor profile, more adventurous whiskey drinkers will revel in this whiskey’s uniqueness.
