Lost Lantern once again delivers a good reminder that Corbin Cash knows how to turn Merced rye into a great whiskey.
The Souza family, who is known for D&S Farms in Atwater, California since 1917, added Corbin Cash Distillery to their family legacy when they opened shop in 2009. Lost Lantern, an independent bottler of American whiskey, has quickly become known for partnering with craft distilleries to highlight unique and expressive barrels from all over the United States. Limited to just 146 bottles, their 2023 Single Cask #14 from Corbin Cash is a follow-up to their 2023 Single Cask #4 from Corbin Cash. While both whiskeys were aged for 7 years, Cask #4 utilized a barrel with a level 4 char, while this release utilizes a level 5 char.
Compared to this year's earlier Cask #4 release, this latest Lost Lantern Corbin Cash release offers similarities yet carries distinct traits that set it apart. Even though it’s a proof point higher, the sip starts off by managing its proof very well. Evergreen and rye scents are present along a slight note of barrel char. Its midpoint is defined by a light silky mouthfeel that highlights spiced syrup and raisins, along with a trio of various spices that help highlight the barrel proof nature of this whiskey. Rounding out with classic rye notes and a warm lingering heat, the sip ends on a pleasing note that rye lovers will enjoy. While I found Cask #4 to be a slightly bolder more dynamic sip, Lost Lantern 2023 Single Cask #14 Corbin Cash is another great showing for Corbin Cash and a reminder that more rye lovers need to explore what this brand is doing in this space.
