Frank August Small Batch Bourbon is a smooth, approachable 100 proof pour that offers a diverse array of fruit, spicy, and sweet bourbon flavors in a sleek package.
Frank August is led by CEO and Co-Founder, Johnathan Crocker, the former denim and fashion executive for AG Jeans and BLDWN. Frank August’s concept isn’t an elaborate backstory, instead allowing the bourbon (and bottle) to speak for itself. The minimalist and contemporary designed bottle is meant to live on long after its contents are empty, as the back label peels off along with the sticker on the bottle neck, producing an elegant reusable decanter.
Frank August Small Batch Bourbon continues to be a solid pour thanks to sourcing and blending that puts forth approachability but not at the cost of diversity of flavor. Green apple begins the aroma and is nicely contrasted by cinnamon, toffee, and warm butterscotch. The palate begins with an interesting mix of lemon, pear, and sweet apple, before settling on traditional notes of caramel and vanilla. The finish gently ramps up the spice level thanks to rye spice and white pepper, before turning to nutmeg, raisin, cinnamon, and seasoned oak to close out its sip.
All of Frank August's whiskeys are bottled in a contemporary designed bottle which gives them a sophisticated look, but can also make deciphering between different releases hard. Frank August Small Batch Bourbon is priced at $70 for its 100 proof pour which borders on a fair price point for the sip it delivers. Many will enjoy its sip, but for enthusiasts looking for a bit more, the company’s Case Study releases are where the complexity takes a leap forward for their whiskeys.
