Copper & Cask Double Oaked Bourbon Batch 007 is part of the company’s Small Batch series. It combines 16 barrels of bourbon covering two mashbills, all of which were distilled by Ross & Squibb Distillery but aged in Kentucky. The company states that “the barrels were re-barreled into a combination of new and used charred and STR barrels for finishing.” It is one of the company’s ongoing products, however, each batch is different and relatively small. The company also focuses on single barrels, and differentiates them with specific wording on the label and on their website. The total bottle count for this release was 2,800.
Copper & Cask sources all of their whiskeys, and they are transparent about those details: Distillery, age, mashbill, etc. They price their whiskeys reasonably, with most ranging from about $55-$65, despite their more involved curation process as many are finished or single barrels, and all are bottled at cask strength. In my experience, their whiskeys are consistently at least average, and sometimes remarkable, as I discovered with their Limited Edition Small Batch 001 release that clocks in at 8 years and was aged in Florida.
Double Oaked Bourbon Batch 007 doesn’t quite hit the high point of Copper & Cask’s Small Batch 001 release, but it does share similar underlying characteristics. It’s full-bodied, and dials in quintessential bourbon flavors of caramel and baking spices. There’s a pleasant creme brulee note on the mid-palate, and oak is present in the finish but not heavy or dry as double-oaked bourbons can sometimes be. Overall, it’s a well done bourbon at a reasonable price point that I have no hesitation recommending.
