Blue Note Wheated Bourbon delivers an acceptable product, but it may have a hard time standing out amongst its peers.
B.R. Distilling Company is located in Memphis, Tennessee, and currently sources much of its whiskey from Green River Distilling, but also from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. Over the years, they have released a range of whiskeys, with their latest being a small batch wheated bourbon. Limited to 2,800 cases (16,800 bottles), the bourbon utilizes a winter wheat grain compared to the company’s Juke Joint bourbon, which uses the same mashbill percentages but swaps wheat for rye instead.
Wheated bourbons come in all ranges with varying degrees of softness and flavor boldness. Blue Note Wheated Bourbon is on the more low-key side of the wheated bourbon spectrum. Even with the bourbon being a 101 proof, the sip is light from start to finish. Baked bread and white peppercorn scents kick off the sip, along with the faintest of honey. The rest of the sip focuses on additional white peppercorn spice, light sweet notes, and a hint of oak to wrap it up. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with the sip, wheated bourbon lovers may expect more, especially considering the bourbon's proof. The end result is a perfectly adequate sipper, but one that will have a hard time standing out in the current crowded marketplace.
