Straightforward and easy sipping, this Three Chord pinot noir finished bourbon will appeal to those who like a spicier bourbon with a hint of sweetness.
Three Chord Strange Collaboration Batch 1 is part of the company’s core expression lineup, which also includes the likes of Honey Toasted and Amplify Rye. To create the finished bourbon, the company blends 3-6 year old Kentucky bourbons and finishes the blend in pinot noir barrels from the Strange Family Vineyards of Santa Rita Hills, California. While the bourbon was originally released in 2021, bottles still carry the Batch 1 moniker.
Wine finished bourbons have permeated the space over the last several years, with some more heavily wine influenced than others. Three Chord Strange Collaboration is a bourbon influenced by its time in the pinot noir barrels, but the finish isn’t the center of attention. Berry jam is noticeable on the nose, along with light, sweet, and spiced scents. The midpoint brings about more spice with a hint of summer berries, while the finish delivers a pop of sweetness before delivering lingering spice. The bourbon’s proof helps define some of its flavors, particularly the spice notes. Three Chord Strange Collaboration doesn’t do much to move the finished category it resides in, but it does deliver an easy to enjoy sip that utilizes its barrel finish to enhance the bourbon versus trying to utilize it to cover up the base blend like so many barrel finished bourbons do.
