Advancing their focus on baseball icons, Remus Lou Gehrig Reserve produces a classic sip while supporting a great cause.
Following up on the company’s 2024 and 2025 Babe Ruth Bourbon releases, Remus is back with a new limited edition bourbon, this time focused on Lou Gehrig, the iconic New York Yankees first baseman. The bottle is a rich tribute to Gehrig’s career, with three defining traits being highlighted by the brand:
Additionally, consumers can visit the company’s website and enter their bottle number to see what Gerhig did in the game of the bottle’s plate appearance. The bottle in review represents Gerhig’s game on July 20, 1937. There, he had 5 plate appearances for the Yankees, going 1-for-5 against the St. Louis Browns, and had 0 home runs. Though this doesn’t have anything to do with how whiskey tastes, it's a clever and interactive addition that ties into the bottle's marketing.
The sip is a straightforward affair that homes in on classic flavors throughout. It starts with an aroma full of classic bourbon scents. Brown sugar and Chinese cinnamon form the base while faint caramel, light nutmeg, and oak add additional depth. The midpoint pulls in many of the same flavors and adds in burnt brown butter and pie crust as the sip starts to turn a little dry. Ending on drier notes, Remus Lou Gehrig Reserve wraps things up with an emphasis on earthier, cinnamon-tinged notes, resulting in a lingering dry spice.
While good, the bourbon itself isn’t the main draw of this bottle. It’s really a whiskey that baseball fans, or those who support modern ALS efforts, will be interested in. The company states that “Remus Bourbon will donate $9,665, one dollar for each of Gehrig's career plate appearances, to the Live Like Lou Foundation, an organization dedicated to funding research and supporting families affected by ALS." Live Like Lou is a great organization that supports people with ALS and partners with innovative companies, such as Talk to Me Goose, to help them. Remus Lou Gehrig Reserve will ultimately be remembered for less of what’s in the bottle and more for the story of the man behind its name and the impact he still has today.
The bourbon in review is bottle number 8598 of 9,665.
