McTavish’s first release is a delight thanks to its highlights of vanilla custard with a caramelized sugar accent.
You may recognize Graham McTavish, the founder and president of McTavish Spirits, from his roles in HBO’s House of Dragon, Netflix’s The Witcher, or one of the many The Hobbit movies he has acted in. “The Warchief,” a 7 year old bottled in bond bourbon sourced from MGP, is the company’s inaugural release. McTavish also starred as Dougal MacKenzie, War Chief of Clan MacKenzie in the Outlander series, which is where the bottle’s name originates.
Using MGP’s 75/21/4 mashbill, McTavish Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is familiar to a degree, but the blend does well to lean into the bourbon’s sweeter flavors, most notably its vanilla custard and caramelized sugar notes. It is a celebrity whiskey, but being bottled in bond, the fact that its age and distillation source are disclosed, combined with its immediate likeability, makes for a product that bucks the celebrity whiskey stereotype, similar to what I’ve seen from Brother’s Bond. As McTavish continues to release whiskeys, I hope the company maintains a focus on what’s inside the bottle like it did with this release.
