Honing in on a classic bourbon profile, the sixth release from Kentucky Senator Bourbon is a good tribute to the Bluegrass State.
Each batch of Kentucky Senator Bourbon carries with it the name of a notable U.S. senator from Kentucky. Release 6 features John Edwards, who was the state’s second senator and was elected the same day that John Brown became the first senator of Kentucky. According to the company, Edwards was “a Virginian by birth, settled in Bourbon County, leaving the U.S. Senate in 1795 to return home to serve in both the Kentucky House and Senate.”
The Kentucky Senator bourbons are known to deliver a more classic pour, and Release #6 is no exception. The bourbon opens with classic scents, focusing on brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Transitioning to the midpoint, the sip is full of sweet spices, thanks to a pleasing combination of bold brown sugar mixing with a cadre of spices. These spices carry through in the form of cinnamon and rye, and push against dry oak and leather before gliding out on a lingering dry spice note.
Release #6 in the series falls in line with the rest of the bottles to date. The brand tends to produce above-average to well above-average bourbons, but also never truly stand out due to their traditional, grounded flavor profiles. That’s not a bad thing in today’s crowded marketplace, as the brand has become reliable and predictable in that sense, sticking to quintessential Kentucky bourbon roots. While the price is usually on the high side, the product has been consistently good at this point. Classic in nature, this is a whiskey that is clearly targeting those who like a well-rounded and very pleasing Kentucky bourbon.
This release consists of approximately 2,000 bottles. The bottle being reviewed is #0819.
