More rum than whiskey, Fortuitous Union Batch 002 Finished in a Woodford Double Oak Cask is a fun and unique bottle that comes with one massive caveat.
The original release of Fortuitous Union was said to be a true accident which resulted in a blend of 60% rum with 40% rye. For Batch 002, the company purposefully blended rum and rye whiskey together, focusing on an even more rum-forward blend this time around. The company states that “the rum and whiskey were blended in a stainless-steel tank and allowed to sit for a period of 3 days. Wheated bourbon, rye whiskey, and toasted bourbon casks were filled with the blend and allowed to age in a warehouse for 20 months. Following the additional cask maturation period, a small batch of three toasted bourbon casks and one wheated bourbon cask was blended. The small batch code is SMB-2022. In addition to the small batch, single cask blends of wheated bourbon cask (barrel code WLR), rye whiskey (barrel codeTHH), and toasted bourbon (barrel code WDO) were bottled.”
It needs to be stated that I’m a huge fan of Foursquare rum, and this has a very prominent Foursquare profile. It starts with a really nice nose that is full of classic rum scents along with an interweaving of Christmas spices and cinnamon. It’s super easy to drink, delivering a palate and finish that are full of rum notes, along with a nice addition of rye spice. The finishing in the Woodford Double Oak barrel seems to mellow out the blend resulting in an even-keeled sip.
This is going to be a love-it-or-hate-it bottle for most. More rum than rye, and with the company confirming that the predominant portion of the rum blend is Foursquare, this is certainly different tasting. If you’re a fan of rum, specifically Foursquare rum with their very unique flavor profile, along with rye, you’re going to find this incredibly unique. However, if you don’t like rum, or you don’t like Foursquare rum, this bottle will be hard to get behind. Personally, I’m a fan of how this came together, but I’m also very cognizant that it won’t be for everyone.
