A double barrel finished single barrel bourbon that solidifies the reason Dragon Milk’s Toasted Single Barrel releases should be on your radar.
New Holland Spirits’ latest toasted barrel release includes three single barrels, including one finished in an ex-sherry barrel and one finished in an ex-port barrel. Each comes with a nickname and neck tag that includes distillery tasting notes, which, based on our experience, are shockingly accurate.
These single barrel releases from New Holland Spirits are some of the single barrel limited releases that we look forward to each time they’re released. The distillery puts out 1-2 sets of single barrels per year, of which each includes 3-4 barrels. They’re sold exclusively at their distillery and tasting room, meaning these highly curated micro-releases are set aside for their local and most dedicated fans.
True to form, Dragon Milk’s toasted and port finished barrel is a complex and delicious pour that resonates with past toasted barrels but has a twist uniquely its own. While New Holland Spirits’ tasting notes are pretty spot on, and it is a pour that leans toward the sweet end of the spectrum, this double barrel finished whiskey isn’t as overly sweet as its nickname, “Always Ask for the Dessert Menu,” suggests. This translates to balance, and the port finishing tempers some of the more prominent citrus tones that Dragon’s Milk is known for, adding fruit notes that include stewed fruit, black raspberry, cherry dump cake, and Luxardo cherry. There are plenty of dessert flavors such as creme brulee, melted caramel, and glazed donut, but the whiskey also has a savory base and shows off toasted oak and clove notes in the palate and finish. Like other Dragon’s Milk Origin Toasted Barrel releases, it’s an easy buy recommendation, but also like those, only a few of the brand’s biggest fans will get the opportunity to experience what this bourbon has to offer.
