Providing an intriguing overall sip, Black Frost Distilling puts out a rye that punches above its class considering its young age.
Black Frost Distilling was co-founded in 2022 by Nate Gieseke and Jace Marti, a 6th generation farmer and a 6th generation brewmaster, respectively. The company is located in New Ulm, Minnesota, and focuses on terroir, which is a French term used to describe the environmental factors that impact a crop, including farming practices, soil, climate, and a crop's specific growth habitat, to name a few. The company uses grains grown on Gieseke’s farm and ages their whiskeys exclusively in Minnesota-grown oak barrels.
Black Frost Blended Rye Malt is a blend made up of 80% of the company’s rye and 20% of their bourbon. It’s only the second whiskey released by the company, following their inaugural Wheated Blended Bourbon Whiskey at the end of 2024. The company states that they “utilize a long, slow fermentation in uniquely shaped, open-top wooden fermenters, which allows the natural flora that comes from the rye to play a significant role in the process.” For the rye portion of the blend, the company uses an heirloom variety of rye called Dank.
Black Frost Blended Rye Malt certainly stands out as unique in a good way. The whiskey opens with an expressive aroma that mingles fresh rye grain, mint leaf, and toasted caramel to intriguing results. The palate, while not as expressive as the nose, still contains a nice array of flavors that mingle well together. Finishing on a shorter note, the whiskey focuses on rye spice and chewy oak, with leather and light cola providing a hint of variation. Whether it’s the homegrown grains or the fermentation process, there is no denying that Black Frost Blended Rye Malt is an intriguing rye. While it still has a youthful overall vein to it, Black Frost put out an intriguing whiskey for their first blended rye, and I’m looking forward to tracking how this progresses with more age on it.
The bottle in review comes from Lot Number 0325.
