Outryder continues to showcase the more unique side of Wyoming Whiskey with its unique collection of flavors.
Claiming the title of Wyoming's first legal whiskey distillery, Wyoming Whiskey was founded in 2009 by Brad and Kate Mead and David DeFazio along with the help of former Maker’s Mark master distiller Steve Nally. The company’s first edition of Outryder followed four years later in 2016 and the brand is now in its sixth edition. Like some previous editions, the mashbill isn’t disclosed, but something prevents Outryder from being called a bourbon. This edition does specify on its label that it is a “blend of stray batches of Wyoming Whiskey.” It’s an interesting way of putting it, yet fitting as it doesn’t adhere to the company’s traditional flavor profile.
The nose is an utterly fascinating collection of scents. Strong apple caramel and cigar leaf combines with Lipton tea, followed by a grassy and floral scent. It’s unique and it works. The palate is just as atypical with barely-sweet bootstrap molasses, burnt toast, brown butter and an underlying thread of cola. The finish adds in black currant and maple syrup with some tannic oak.
Wyoming Whiskey Outryder continues to be the odd man out within the company’s brand portfolio. Its oddness perhaps keeps it from reaching greater heights, yet there is something special that remains about it. It continues to push boundaries however minor, but offers something unique with its sip. Wyoming Whiskey continues to mature as a distillery and Outryder makes a strong case because of its uniqueness for its ongoing inclusion in their brand portfolio.
