A sweet, fruit-forward port finished bourbon that’s proofed to be an everyday sipper, it still struggles with a dry red wine tasting finish.
Woodinville launched their Woodinville Straight Bourbon Finished in Port Casks in 2019, which saw subsequent releases as limited releases for the company. That has now changed and has become an ongoing standard release. It maintains the brand’s 72% corn, 22% rye, 7% malted barley, and doesn’t offer an age statement, but the company stated that the original release was 5 years with 6 months of finishing time.
Surprisingly, not much has changed with this release since we reviewed the original offering. It still offers a bright and sweet aroma of mixed berries. The nose transitions to the palate nicely with the addition of sweet raspberry and grape up front, with dark chocolate after. The finish features a prominent plum and grape note layered against seasoned oak.
Like before, the whiskey ends on a dry note with a lingering wine aftertaste that hampers many wine-finished bourbons. It’s not so strong that it derails what came before, but it keeps the whiskey from reaching greater heights. It’s a minor complaint that is still present in this release. However, many will find Woodinville Straight Bourbon Finished in Port Casks a very easy sipper due to its proof and sweet, fruit-forward flavor profile.
