Fusing comic book style storytelling with bourbon, Maltyverse’s 6 year old single barrel from Green River Distillery is a short barrel with a straightforward and pleasant flavor profile.

Maltyverse is a new brand from Barrel Global, a company that allows anyone to purchase a barrel of whiskey or tequila. Maltyverse is centered around narrative-driven branding that fuses comic storytelling with limited-edition bottlings. It’s a new and unique approach to whiskey marketing. The Wreck in Kentucky bottle in review is part of a 159 bottle single barrel release.

Showcasing eye-catching custom label artwork and only a few releases so far, it is clear that the Maltyverse series intends to expand into a range of different whiskeys. Wreck in Kentucky is a more straightforward release, being a 6 year old bourbon with a traditional bourbon mashbill sourced from Green River Distillery. The bourbon opens with a hint of orange peel on the nose, which is underscored by notes of honey, caramel, and allspice. Caramel spills over into the palate, which is joined by baking spices, pie crust, and seasoned oak. A hint of graham cracker also emerges, which carries over into the finish that is accented by nutmeg and allspice, along with a touch of honey.

Overall, this is a solid bourbon with a very low yield considering it was proofed down to 96 and only produced 159 bottles. It’s straightforward with widespread appeal. With that being said, I would prefer to see more dynamic and unusual single barrel releases with a greater chance of standing out, given the unique labeling and concept behind the brand.
