For the first time ever, consumers can try unadulterated George Dickel distilled rye thanks to Lost Lantern’s latest Single Distillery Series: Wild Woodland release.
For Lost Lantern’s latest Single Distillery Series, the company partnered with Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. While that name may ring a bell for whiskey enthusiasts, most people know Cascade Hollow Distilling by its more common name: George Dickel. Jack Daniel’s may be the name that pops into most consumers' heads when they think of Tennessee whiskey; however, George Dickel is usually just a short step behind as the second one that comes to mind.
Lost Lantern’s first heritage distillery partner, George Dickel Rye is a blend of rye whiskeys from five casks that have all been aged for 7 years. While George Dickel does have a standalone rye whiskey on the market, it’s actually sourced rye from MGP. The distillery has collaborated with Leopol Bros in the past to release a blended rye but has never released a rye that was 100% distilled in-house. That changes with Wild Woodland (and the other George Dickel rye single casks that are part of this Lost Lantern release), which are the first standalone George Dickel Tennessee rye products that have ever come to market.
The rye opens with a really pleasing aroma that pops with nutmeg, sweet oak, and cinnamon. Lighter scents of faint cinnamon apple and buttermilk bread add intrigue before transitioning to a heavy apple and a spice-influenced midpoint. Tart apple and baking spices make their presence known first before a trio of bold rye spice, oak, and Hi-Chew Green Apple candy. The sweetness the candy note adds is stripped away in the finish as a more traditional rye experience takes hold. Rye spice and black peppercorn push against heavy charred oak and stand firm, as lingering barrel char and rye spice round things out.
For rye lovers, this is a chance to try unadulterated George Dickel rye for the first time, and many will walk away wondering why the company hasn’t switched to distilling their own rye in-house a long time ago. The whiskey provides all the bold rye spice flavors that many will be expecting, but also adds a nice amount of sweetness and uniqueness, particularly in the midpoint with its apple notes. Lost Lantern did a great job bringing Wild Woodland George Dickel Rye to life, and hopefully this is the first of many 100% in-house distilled ryes from Cascade Hollow.
The rye in review is 1 of 664 bottles and is from edition #GD-R.
