Gentle yet assertive where it counts, this malted wheat whiskey distilled by Cedar Ridge Distillery proves Lost Lantern’s point that the Midwest is an exciting frontier of American whiskeys.
Cedar Ridge Distillery was founded in 2005 and was the first licensed distillery in Iowa since Prohibition. The distillery initially produced wine and a number of other spirits before producing whiskey. Cedar Ridge Distillery launched their first bourbon in 2010 to pay homage to Iowa being the largest corn-producing state in the Union. Since that time, the company has launched a number of bourbon, rye, wheat, and other specialty whiskeys. This release is part of the company’s focus on the Midwest, with the 203 limited bottle release being the first time that Lost Lantern has offered a Cedar Ridge wheat whiskey, compared to the numerous rye and bourbons they’ve partnered with the company on in the past.
Wheat whiskeys aren’t as popular compared to other styles of American whiskeys. Created using a mashbill of 100% wheat, this release by Lost Lantern adds a nice twist to the category by showcasing a 100% malted white winter wheat grain from Cedar Ridge. The result is a gentle yet powerful whiskey that showcases sweet and spicy notes from start to finish. Opening with a soft aroma full of sweet scents, it quickly showcases the impact that using just wheat can have on a whiskey. The palate transitions to bold spice notes which showcase the whiskey proof but never push things too far, instead offering an interesting dichotomy of sweet and spicy flavors. Ending on a wave of defined yet gentle spice, Lost Lantern 2024 Single Cask #6: Cedar Ridge will quickly make a fan out of those who haven’t explored wheat whiskeys in-depth before.
