An interesting dark fruits heavy Madeira finished bourbon that’s made up of only 8 barrels.
“Perfect Harmony” is Hidden Barn’s 3rd annual Madeira finished bourbon release and consists of an eight barrel blend. For this release, the distillery transferred 6 year old bourbon to first-fill ex-Madeira casks where it was finished for 7 months, then “open-air vatted for several days allowing oxidation to occur and the entire batch to open up,” according to the company.
The Hidden Barn brand is an up-and-comer in the bourbon space, and it’s important to point out that releases are all distilled in-house at their Neeley Family Distillery. Releases are small, and to a degree, feel almost experimental in nature. I’ve noticed similar undertones across various releases, which include more earthy, grain-forward notes. Considering releases are not necessarily young, as this one clocks in at 6 years plus finishing time, it’s likely a representation of some of their earlier distillate and isn’t a criticism. It’s instead an observation as it’s a trait that, so far, distinguished Hidden Barn releases from their Kentucky major counterparts. To that end, with Hidden Barn you can be confident you are getting something unique.
Perfect Harmony is a dark-fruit lover’s whiskey, through and through. Black raspberry, black cherry, raspberry jam, and just overall jammy dark fruits are the defining characteristics of the whiskey. These flavors rest on a slightly earthy, grain-forward base, with accents of toffee, cinnamon, baking spices, and a pancake syrup note in the finish. If you enjoy Hidden Barn’s style, Perfect Harmony is another winner.
