Full of soft flavors, Hidden Barn Organic Wheated Bourbon Batch 1 will satisfy those who are seeking out bourbons made with organic grains.
Hidden Barn created their first certified organic bourbon to celebrate this year’s Bourbon Heritage Month. The company states that this bourbon was distilled in Michigan at Journeyman Distillery with organic grains and certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Kentucky Department of Agriculture. The barrels used were selected, batched, and proofed by Master Blender Jackie Zykan, before further aging and being bottled at the Neeley Family Distillery in Sparta, Kentucky, which became certified organic as part of this process. Batch 1 consists of a total of 9 barrels in the blend.
Opening on more traditional bourbon scents, Hidden Barn Organic Wheated Bourbon Batch 1 leans into its wheat component, producing a pleasing, sweet, gentle aroma. This theme carries over to the midpoint, which pulls in inoffensive spice along with more baking-focused ingredients. Wrapping up with a mixture of spice and sweetness, the bourbon rides out on a short, light heat. I can’t say that I noticed any difference in the use of organic grains compared to other bourbons, but for those looking for a certified organic straightforward wheated bourbon, Hidden Barn Organic Wheated Bourbon Batch 1 will check that box for you.
