Garrison Brothers Ranch Reserve PX Single Barrel transforms the potentially overpowering PX sherry finish into a concentrated, cask strength showcase of blackberry and blueberry cobbler, creating an intensely flavorful bourbon that elevates the original release to greater heights.
In June 2026, Garrison Brothers released the first two bottles of its new Ranch Reserve Series. This new collection of limited edition bottles focuses on barrel finishing, with the inaugural release showcasing two types of sherry finishing. Both the Oloroso and PX editions start off with a base of 4 year old Garrison Small Batch Bourbon before they’re finished in their respective sherry casks for an additional 4 years. During the blending of these releases, Donnis Todd, the master distiller of Garrison Brothers, held back 27 “standout barrels” — 14 PX barrels between 122.0 and 135.2 proof, and 13 oloroso barrels ranging from 124.6 to 136.7 proof. Todd adds, “Every now and then, a few barrels tell you they’re not meant to be blended away. These PX and Oloroso ‘troublemakers’ had the depth, structure, and cask-strength character we look for in a true standout, so we bottled them exactly as they came out of the barrel.”
In a single barrel, cask strength form, everything tastes more concentrated and on a more level playing field. Garrison Brothers’ intense bourbon traits are present and handle the heavy-handed PX sherry finish better. But somewhere along the way, the bourbon and barrel finish flavors meet, and that’s where the magic really happens.
From start to finish, blackberry and blueberry are the stars of the show, but their supporting cast of flavors lifts the whole production. This tastes like a fresh out of the oven blackberry and blueberry cobbler pie, where the berry notes have baked down and become extremely concentrated. That intensely rich flavor sheds much of the inherent fortified wine taste and returns to its pure berry essence. It’s further backed by notes of sweet cinnamon roll filling, molasses, dark chocolate, a chocolate glazed donut, and intense, chewy charred oak.
Producers love to play up single barrel and cask strength as selling points, but sometimes they offer only slight variations. With Garrison Brothers Ranch Reserve PX Sherry Single Barrel, those changes remake and transform the whiskey altogether. Big dark fruit notes, combined with big Garrison Brothers bourbon notes, create another huge-tasting whiskey from the Texas whiskeymaker.
The bourbon in review is bottle #214 from barrel #PX10.
