Barrell Bourbon New Year 2027 trades overall balance for an impactful wave of seamlessly integrated sweet, spicy, and oak-driven flavors that showcase Barrell Craft Spirits’ blending expertise.
Barrell Bourbon New Year is a way for Barrell Craft Spirits to celebrate the distilleries they’ve sourced from throughout the year. Though a “kitchen sink” approach can have negative connotations, Barrell Craft Spirits' blenders have a long track record of blending excellence.
With a wide range of distilleries and different aged bourbons in this year’s release, it lacks finesse and balance, but it makes up for it in pure flavor. A lot of flavors hit you at once, and it isn’t until you pump the brakes that you start to pull the individual components out.
Most of the same states return from last year’s release, except New York is replaced with Texas; and some similarities remain present. Caramel plays a big role throughout. On the nose, cinnamon potpourri is more noticeable this year. The palate begins sweet, thanks to summer fruits, brown sugar, and caramel, before a spicy nut note comes into play. That spice carries into the finish, where it meets rich baking spices, light black cherry, and apricot before leather and aged oak take over.
The main takeaway from this year’s Barrell Bourbon New Year isn’t its blending finesse, but more of how the blending of so many different components (13 in total) creates such a big flavor front. It isn’t solely the proof; it's a wave of flavors that ebb and flow, transitioning seamlessly from sweet to spice. With Barrell Craft Spirits shifting much of its focus to new, innovative barrel finishes across many releases throughout the year, it's fun to revisit what put them on the map. Barrell Bourbon New Year 2027 is once again a blend from the company that excels at flavor integration, resulting in a bourbon that won’t necessarily be remembered for its subtlety, but instead, for how it delivers its wide range of flavors impactfully.
