A sweet, flavorful bourbon that’s a welcome addition to Bardstown Bourbon Company’s core lineup of in-house distilled Origin Series expressions.
High Wheat Bourbon is Bardstown Bourbon Company’s latest addition to their Origin Series lineup, which is a collection of core whiskeys distilled 100% in-house. High Wheat Bourbon ups the proof compared to other whiskeys in the series, which range from 96-100 proof, and all come in at 6 years old. High Wheat Bourbon features a few notable traits which include its high amount of wheat at 39% and low barrel entry proof of only 108 proof, which is much lower than the maximum allowable (and more frequently used) 125 barrel entry proof. The launch was announced in August, 2024, and High Wheat Bourbon is slated to be an ongoing core release.
Origin Series High Wheat Bourbon is a flavorful expression that’s full of sweet notes. It starts with apricot, orange zest, and vanilla cream, which are accented by a dab of white pepper. On the palate sweet flavors of buttercream frosting, butterscotch candy, and toffee mingle with a dried apricot fruit note. Warming heat is amplified in the finish, which includes cinnamon, allspice, and slight leather on the tail end. At 106 proof it’s a robust pour, but never hot.
While the wheated bourbon category has continued to expand, there are still fewer wheated bourbons than rye bourbons on the market, and of the wheated bourbon expressions, few include such a high level of wheat as this release does. High Wheat Bourbon is a nice addition to Bardstown Bourbon Company’s core lineup. Considering this along with its age and quality, Origin Series High Wheat Bourbon is a good option at $50.
