Featuring four different finishing barrels results in a flavor juggernaut with a shockingly low price.
Wheel Horse Bourbon Cigar Blend has become an annual release for Latitude Beverage Co. Utilizing sourced bourbon, the company finishes their blend in port, Cognac, sherry, and Armagnac casks for 6-8 months. For this year’s release, they added Coganc to the array of finishing barrels and the result is a sip with even more flavor packed into it.
The term “cigar blend” is undefined, and as a result, has different meanings to different drinkers and companies. As the name suggests, it is typically meant to be paired with a cigar, but it has become more than that over the years. That reigns true with this year’s Wheel Horse Bourbon Cigar Blend. Packing a whopping four finishing types into one blend is aggressive but this year’s blend improves upon last year’s by a good degree.
Though it’s hard to pick out any one finish in particular, this year’s Wheel Horse Cigar Blend packs in as much dark and dried fruit as one bourbon could reasonably take. Perhaps what’s even more impressive is its price. Finishing one bourbon can add to its cost, but combining four is not common, and unheard of being priced under $50. The only thing holding it back is its base bourbon blend. It doesn’t hold up well against the four finishes, and while that is a tall order for any whiskey to muster, it remains its main fault. But with so much flavor on offer with this year’s Wheel Horse Cigar Blend, few will even notice.
