Utilizing a blend of three finishing barrels, Wheel Horse Bourbon Cigar Blend evokes fewer feelings of pairing well with a cigar and more so focuses on its mixed berry and red fruit underpinnings.
Wheel Horse Bourbon was one of the first bourbons to come out of the O.Z. Tyler Distillery, which has since been acquired and renamed the Green River Distillery. The brand, which is owned by independent bottler Latitude Beverage Co., consists of core bourbon and rye releases. For their latest limited edition release, the company takes a 4 year bourbon and finishes it in a combination of Armagnac, sherry, and port casks for approximately 6-8 months. The company states roughly 3,000 bottles were included in this release.
Some cigar barrel blends do a better job than others when it comes to envisioning a perfect pairing with a cigar. In the case of Wheel Horse Bourbon Cigar Blend, I can’t say it evokes visions of this, however, it does do a straightforward job of highlighting the finishing barrels used to create it. Focusing on delivering a slew of various berry and vanilla flavors from start to finish, the whiskey succeeds in pleasing those looking for a more-to-the-point cask finished bourbon. Its red fruits in the nose and mixed berry notes in the palate are the highlights, while its straightforward and shorter finish leaves you with a desire for more. A nod should be given to the MSRP of this bourbon, as it doesn’t pretend to be more than it is, and the company charges accordingly for it. Overall, this is a straightforward finished bourbon that will please those who look for sweeter barrel finish influences.
