The addition of malted rye produces a surprising amount of sweetness along with spice in the latest edition of Westward Whiskey’s Two Malts Rye.

Westward Whiskey Two Malts Rye 2023 is the second release in Westward Whiskey’s whiskey club. According to the company’s press release, “the release marks the whiskey producer’s second edition of Two Malts Rye and is part of the ‘Two Malts’ innovation series that explores the many flavors and nuances of regional and global grains.” The whiskey was distilled in July 2018 and features a mashbill comprised of mostly malted barley sourced from the Pacific Northwest, along with 12% malted rye which was sourced from and malted at the company’s longtime partner, Great Western Malting. This is the second time that Westward Whiskey has released Two Malts Rye, with their 2019 edition being almost identical, except for the fact that its malted rye component made up 10% of the mashbill.

Normally when you think of a heavy malted barley whiskey, you think of baking chocolate, oak, and other earthier notes. While those flavor notes are present, the addition of 12% malted rye imparts a really nice dynamic to the sip. Opening with notes of baking chocolate and summer fruits results in an enjoyable and intriguing nose. Diving further, the palate highlights traditional malted barley and baking chocolate, however, it is joined by light rye spice and cinnamon stick. Combined with a faint fruit salad note, the overall flavors mingle well and present an enjoyable midpoint. Rounding things out on notes of semi-sweet chocolate chips along with cinnamon and rye spice, the finish ends with gentle lingering heat. Overall, Two Malts Rye 2023 is a nice showing by Westward Whiskey. Its fruitier and spice infused palate is a nice change of pace from your typical 100% malted rye mashbill, and thanks to its 90 proof point, ultimately produces an easy going and enjoyable sip.
