Using an Irish-inspired mashbill to produce a single pot still American Whiskey, Talnua Distillery shows off their potential with their first ultra-limited Bottled in Bond release.
Talnua differentiates itself in the American whiskey space by producing single pot still American whiskey. In the world of Irish whiskey, a single pot still whiskey means that the whiskey is distilled in a pot still by a single distillery from a mixed mash of malted and unmalted barley. Talnua uses the same 50% unmalted barley, 50% malted barley mashbill for all of their whiskeys.
According to the company’s press release, “Talnua Distillery released the world’s first Bottled-in-Bond American Single Pot Still Whiskey on Independence Day weekend, 2022. The release was a single barrel presented exclusively at the Irish Whiskey Fans of America meetup which was hosted at the distillery.” The release was limited to less than 250 bottles.
Talnua Distillery’s style of whiskey making is certainly more European than American, and judging by the bottle’s packaging one might be surprised that it originates from Colorado. While I feel many of their other releases still need more proof or age, Bottled in Bond does a much better job showcasing the potential for their particular style of distillation. Attaining the 4 year and 100 proof mark, and then presumably selecting an ideal barrel, the resulting whiskey is rich with unique flavors. While it certainly leans towards feeling more like an Irish whiskey or Scotch with its flavor profile, Bottled in Bond packs enough different flavors to make sure it’s bringing something new to the table.
