At only 2 years old, this Samuel Maverick Texas bourbon is unusual, but interesting and uncharacteristically sweet.
The San Antonio, Texas-based Sam Maverick Spirits was established in 2017 and was named after the famous Texas legislature/signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence/land baron/Texas Alamo survivor. The distillery is held up in the old Lockwood National Bank which just so happens to be located next to the Texas Alamo. The company distills spirits on-site, however we confirmed that they source Samuel Maverick Bourbon from another distillery.
This Texas straight bourbon is an uncharacteristically sweet and easy-drinking whiskey. It does allow some of its grain to show through, which isn’t surprising at 2 years old, however it has a sturdy sweetness to it that isn’t typical of Texas distilled whiskeys. Creme brulee and caramel on the nose, cotton candy, bubble gum, and Peeps candy on the palate, and then some raw sugar on the finish, makes for an interesting sip. It isn’t like a typical Kentucky bourbon, but it isn’t like a typical Texas bourbon either. It might still be a bit clumsy at its age, but it still manages to be an interesting and unique sip.
The bottle in review is from batch number 20-25 and is bottle number 1027.
