A sourced Texas bourbon blended by another Texas distillery, Samuel Maverick Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon is surprisingly flavorful for its age, however, it ultimately falls victim to lack of time spent aging.
Maverick Whiskey was established in 2017 and resides in San Antonio Texas and was named after the famous Texas legislature/signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence/land baron/Texas Alamo survivor The distillery is held up in the old Lockwood National Bank which just so happens to be located next to the Texas Alamo. The company distills spirits on-site, however for Samuel Maverick Barrel Proof Bourbon, states that it is “produced by skillfully selecting the best barrels of Certified Texas Whiskey that are brought in from a Texas distillery.” The bourbon is then blended on-site before being bottled.
The theme of Samuel Maverick Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon can best be summed up in two words: sweet and youthful. The bourbon carries prominent sweet notes throughout, with a particular focus on varying degrees of sweet corn and vanilla. Youthful grain and oak are prominent with a sharp peppercorn spice which comes across as harsh, reminding you of its young age. Surprisingly, it brings forward more depth than I was expecting for a two year old bourbon, however, aging in the hot climate of Texas often has a way of speeding up flavor development. Overall, Samuel Maverick Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon can’t cheat Father Time, as the lower amount of aging time in the barrel ultimately can’t overcome its youthful grainy notes.
