Two southern natives teamed up to release a bourbon distilled in Florida, which is something you don’t hear about too often in the world of whiskey.
Rolling Rooster Bourbon is a collaboration between Florida based St. Augustine Distillery and Florida native and musician, JJ Grey. The collaborative whiskey is stated as being “inspired by Grey's deep-rooted connection to the South and his love for the soulful flavors of home, Rolling Rooster is a bourbon that personifies the spirit of Southern comfort.” The bourbon is said to incorporate imagery and inspiration from JJ Grey & Mofro’s latest album, “Olustee.”
Right off the bat, this bourbon introduces itself as a whiskey that’s not going to taste like your traditional Kentucky and Indiana bourbon. You’re greeted with big scents of raw grain and new oak, along with light sweet brown sugar and caramel. This elicits instant thoughts of young craft whiskey, which continues to stay true in the palate and finish. The sip rounds out with lighter, sweeter flavors at the midpoint, but oak and grain persist and are really driven home in the finish. This will appeal to those who like a more youthful flavor profile for their whiskey, but overall, Rolling Rooster Bourbon leaves you wanting more than what it offers.
The bourbon in review comes from release number 1 and is bottle number 0535.
