Crossing into double-digit age territory, Pinhook’s Tiz Rye Time Vertical series continues to be a fascinating experiment in aging.
Pinhook Tiz Rye Time 10 Year is the seventh bottle in the brand’s vertical rye series, following last year's excellent 9 year old release. While last year saw the highest proof for the vertical rye series yet, the brand dropped down to 106 proof to mark the 10th year of aging. According to Pinhook founder Sean Josephs, this year's edition is made up of a blend of approximately 22 of the original 450 barrels. The price continues to increase year after year, with this year's release now marking the first time that the vertical has been priced at $100 or above.
Similar to last year, this year’s edition contains creamery flavor notes. The opening aroma is intriguing, offering up scents of mint leaf, fruit salad, and dulce de leche before moving into a creamy-based midpoint. Creamy caramel, condensed milk, and a variety of spices provide a nice peak for the sip. The ending adds additional spice and sweet notes, with creamy vanilla and a faint fruit salad providing a hint of sweetness before transitioning to a gentle, lingering spice.
Last year’s 9 year old release took the vertical to the next level, and made our Best Rye list for 2025. While an additional year in the barrel continues to slowly morph the flavor profile, it just can’t quite reach the same level as its slightly younger predecessor did. This is all the more evident when tasting them together side by side. That said, the latest entry in the Tiz Rye Time Vertical Series is a great showing for Pinhook, and whether you’re trying to collect the whole vertical or just enjoy a flavorful rye, this year’s 10 year edition is a great whiskey to seek out.
