Utilizing a toasted finishing barrel, Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company is able to produce a pleasing sweet and spicy pour.
Peerless Toasted Rye Batch 2 is the company’s second release of toasted bourbon, following the release of Batch 1, which arrived on the market in early 2025. The company takes their standard rye and ages it in a char level 3 barrel for an undisclosed amount of time. Once aged to the company’s desired flavor profile, the rye is finished in toasted barrels for an unspecified amount of time. Peerless Toasted Rye follows up the addition of Peerless Toasted Bourbon, which the company launched in 2024.
A warm aroma starts off the sip, with scents of toasted oak, yellow cake, vanilla, and spiced honey. The midpoint opens up further to reveal pleasing flavors of honey, rye spice, chocolate, and more grounded earthy notes of charred oak, tobacco leaf, and roasted nuts. Pulling in flavor notes found earlier in the sip, the finish leans into a cadre of spices, in the form of baking spices, rye spice, spiced honey, and white peppercorn spice. The resulting sip is very good, and thanks to the time in the toasted barrel, sweeter flavors are brought forward, allowing the whiskey to present itself as a sweet, subtly spiced option to whiskey drinkers. Overall, this is a great addition to the Peerless lineup.
