Mythology Syrah Finished Whiskey takes a base blend of bourbon and rye, and highlights the Syrah finishing barrels delivering in a way bourbon drinkers will enjoy.
According to the company, Mythology Syrah Finished Whiskey is their Hell Bear American Whiskey finished in Dominio IV Syrah wine barrels. Dominio IV is a vineyard located about an hour southwest of Portland, Oregon. Syrah, also known as shiraz, is a dark grape used to make the wine, which is known for being rich and full-bodied.
The base bourbon and rye blend takes the syrah finish very well, allowing it to come forward and shine against an approachable whiskey backdrop. While the flavors driven by the syrah are prominent throughout, they are delivered very cohesively by the whiskey, making for a sip that’s heavy in dark fruit flavors akin to an intense red wind. Notably, unlike many red wine finished whiskeys, the whiskey manages to avoid turning dry in the finish (often to a fault), instead maintaining its sweet posture throughout. And while the base whiskeys are most likely young (Hell Bear is aged a minimum of 2 years), none of their youth shows through. Overall Mythology Syrah Finished Whiskey is very well done, highlighting the finishing barrels but delivered in a way bourbon drinkers will enjoy.
