Utilizing only two grains produces a rich and well balanced sip in the latest Lost Lantern Summer of Bourbon release.
Union Horse Distilling Company was established in 2010 in Lenexa, Kansas. The distillery produces several ongoing releases, from a single-grain rye to a four-grain bourbon. While most distilleries produce a standard three-grain bourbon, Union Horse Distilling Company takes the road less traveled, producing a two-grain bourbon for its Reserve Bourbon. This is the first time that Lost Lantern has worked with Union Horse Distilling Company.
Opening on rich classic aromas, the bourbon’s scents are incredibly pleasing and a great way to kick things off. The midpoint carries over some of those same attributes but adds in more earthy and woody notes thanks to tannic oak, barrel char, and leather. The combination of flavors works well but takes away the sweetness found in the nose. Rounding things out with a spice-forward presence, the addition of charred oak and leather adds a touch of variety. Surprisingly, this drinks easier than you might expect for the proof. A rare two grain bourbon, Lost Lantern 2024 Single Cask 9 does a great job of balancing sweet and spicy flavors while allowing earthy notes to add a nice contrast.
Lost Lantern 2024 Single Cask 9: Union Horse Kansas Straight Bourbon is a 200 bottle release.
