The distillery's first solera release, Jeptha Creed Solera Aged Bourbon: 10th Anniversary Edition, includes 9 heirloom corn varietals and bourbon aged 4 years and up.
Solera Aged Bourbon was created in honor of Jeptha Creed Distillery’s 10th Anniversary. The release debuted at the 2026 Kentucky Bourbon Festival and is now available at the distillery and on the company’s website.
Solera Aged Bourbon: 10th Anniversary Edition is the first solera-aged release from Jeptha Creed. More commonly used in winemaking, a solera is a continuous fractional blending system where you keep a portion of the old liquid in the system and progressively add younger liquid. If barrels are never fully dumped, the system will retain fractional portions of every barrel ever introduced to the system, in continuously decreasing, but never zero, percentages. Jeptha Creed has adopted its own unique solera aging process specifically for its heirloom corn program. Their system contains bourbons from all nine heirloom varietals they’ve grown and distilled: Bloody Butcher, Bruce’s Blue, Blue Clarage, Hopi Blue, Hickory King, Jimmy Red, Oaxacan Green, Pink Heirloom, and White Cob White. It’s continuous, and bourbons entered so far have been at least 4 years old, though some included in the final blend are much older, according to the company.
Solera Aged Bourbon is a fascinating, notable release from Jeptha Creed. Hillrock Estate Distillery was the first to introduce solera aging into the bourbon space, and since then a few other distillers and producers have built their own solera systems and/or introduced solera-aged products in different formats. Jeptha Creed’s use of unique corn varietals brings an interesting element into the mix.
Surprisingly, the final blend isn't a mishmash of flavors, as the nine corn varietals in the whiskey might suggest. And to that end, the flavor profile is quite a bit less unusual than I expected, instead landing about midway between classic and unique. What’s most striking is the bourbon’s richness, which is most prominent at the midpoint and supported by a fairly long finish. It has an earthy undertone, but where Jeptha Creed bourbons can sometimes be too earthy, it's quite pleasant here. The grain-forwardness is also present, but masked by a flavor more akin to freshly baked whole grain bread, which is again, quite pleasant. Where I think the solera still has a lot of room to go is in layers of complexity, which are starting to show themselves here, but with flavors more rich and defined, the depth is not on full display yet. Overall, however, Jeptha Creed Solera Aged Bourbon: 10th Anniversary Edition is an exciting first release originating from the distillery’s solera system.
