Heaven Hill is well known for their ongoing bottled in bond products across their portfolio, including: Old Fitzgerald, Rittenhouse Rye, Mellow Corn, and their well-known Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond. However, up until this point, the company has never released a double mash bottled in bond product, combining two different whiskey mash types that both meet the legal definition of being a bottled in bond bourbon. That changes with the release of their new Bottled-in-Bond Double Mash, which combines a traditional bourbon mashbill and a wheated bourbon mashbill, both of which have been aged for 9 years and proofed to 100.

Even though the blend isn’t a straight 50% of each bourbon type, the final blended bourbon mashbill chosen ends up being an almost equal amount of rye and wheat at 6.65% and 6.7%, respectively. Conor O'Driscoll, the master distiller at Heaven Hill Distillery, states, "Double Mash is a reflection of our understanding of both Bourbon making and the Bottled-in-Bond standards that have defined quality American Whiskey for more than a century. By bringing together our traditional and Wheated Bourbon mashbills, we've created a first-of-its-kind Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey that delivers a distinctly different tasting experience while remaining true to the craftsmanship and authenticity that define Heaven Hill.”

The bourbon's proof helps pull the flavors forward, and the sip starts with sweet scents. An aroma containing a mixture of brown sugar, caramel, honey, and stone fruits greets you, while a unique wafer scent adds intrigue and highlights the wheat grain component. The palate leans heavily into the rye component as white peppercorn, rye spice, and caramel appear, while leather and dry oak highlight the bourbon's age. These carry through to the finish, with the oak turning tannic and white peppercorn giving way to a more forceful black peppercorn to round things out.

A 4 grain bourbon isn’t uncommon, but Heaven Hill took the hard road to get to their collective 4 grain mashbill for Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Double Mash. The rye and wheat grains start the sip off in balance before the rye grain begins to assert more dominance as the sip goes on. Overall, this is an average bourbon that leans into its wheat and rye mashbill along with its age, yet never tries to be more either. At $10 more and 2 years older than Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond, it gives consumers more choice in the brand's portfolio, which is never a bad thing.
