2024’s Barrell Craft Spirits Gray Label Bourbon delivers an enjoyable sip that dials in complex sweet notes with a savory undertone.

This year marks the 6th release of Barrell Craft Spirits Gray Label Bourbon. The 2024 blend combines bourbons aged 13 to 19 years that were distilled in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Wyoming. Unusual in today’s bourbon space, this year’s edition cuts the price back from the previous $250 price point of the 2022 release to $160, which should make consumers take note.

The bourbon is a sweet affair, starting with a dynamic aroma of honey, buttercream frosting, cinnamon bun, raisin, and toasted marshmallow. There’s a pleasant richness to it and little hint of the proof. More sweet flavors evolve on the palate, with apple pie and a cinnamon-sugar mix upfront. There’s honey and graham cracker, and a savory mineral note that complements the more prevalent sweet side. The bourbon finishes with a wave of spice defined by cinnamon and allspice, then settles on a savory undertone of leather and tobacco. Spice lingers, making it a long finish.

Barrell Craft Spirits dials in balance with all of their releases, and 2024’s Gray Label Bourbon is no exception. The company chose to take this year’s edition into sweeter territory, though savory notes emerge in the midpalate and finish. It’s a subtle contrast from any given Barrell Bourbon batch, which are well balanced bourbons as well. For fans of Barrell Craft Spirits and especially those who appreciate a sweeter pour, 2024’s Barrell Craft Gray Label Bourbon delivers.
