A nicely integrated Amburana finished rye whiskey that will scratch your Amburana itch.
A.M. Scott Distillery was founded in 2022 and is located in Troy, Ohio. In addition to whiskey, the company produces vodka and gin. The company prides itself in producing spirits that are approachable, affordable, and accessible.
A.M. Scott’s Cigar Batch Rye blends rye and Amburana finishing nicely. It leads with baking spices, cinnamon, dense toasted oak, and stewed fruit, with some heat on the back of the nose. On the palate cinnamon roll, caramel, baking spices, ginger snap cookie, and dark fruits are nicely integrated. Waves of spice, along with black cherry with a lingering spice, cap the whiskey off.
Amburana finished whiskeys can be polarizing, and I fall on the side that typically enjoys them. With a few exceptions, I tend to gravitate towards Amburana finished ryes over bourbons. The underlying potency of ryes with their heavier spice strikes a nice balance with the cinnamon, gingerbread, and dark fruit flavors Amburana finishing usually adds to a whiskey. Unfortunately, this is a single barrel finished rye, so no other whiskey will taste exactly like it. However, it does prove that A.M. Scott Distillery is capable of working with Amburana finished rye (a difficult task), so if you’re an Amburana fan, future releases should be on your radar.
The bottle in review is from Barrel No. 2, and is bottle 104 of 207.
