For this pick, we partnered with Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.

Mile High Spirits is located in the city of Denver, Colorado. The distillery derives its name from the fact that at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level, Denver is known as the Mile High City. This pick was conducted on site when we went to visit and tour the distillery itself in the fall of last year. You can read more about that visit here.

We’ve been fans of Mile High Spirits ever since we tasted their spirits last year. Their rye’s and bourbon’s are some of the more unique whiskeys we’ve had a chance to try and it shows that this brand is on track to make a serious name for themselves as they continue to put down more and more whiskey barrels to age. During our trip out their we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick a barrel for our club members.

The distillery offered up some serious barrels for us to pick from too. Sitting down with co-founder Wyn Ferrell and master distiller Tyler Joyce, they rolled out a number of barrels. All were aged in 53 gallon barrels for several years which was nice to see. We each tasted through the 5 barrels independently and then compared notes. It was a unanimous decision by everyone that barrel number #3 was truly the standout of the group. This 53 gallon barrel was initially filled on 7/20/17 putting this at a little over 4 years old. We’re beyond excited to introduce our club members to a brand that they may not have had before, but should definitely be on their radar!

For the sticker we paid homage to the fact that Mile Hile Spirits seriously embraces their motto of “We take our spirits seriously, but not ourselves.” Virtually all of the equipment in the distillery is given a name that is prominently displayed on it. This includes their fermenters named Snap, Crackle, and Pop. It’s these little details which remind everyone hard work can be fun and rewarding, and we wanted to make sure that we’re all reminded of this whenever we go for a pour from this release.

Tasting Notes:
