Wyatt Earp American Single Malt is one of World Whiskey Society’s many collections. The bottles are eye-catching, as they’re packaged in a modified version of design used for their Doc Holliday brand. In Wyatt Earp Barrel Proof’s case, this includes metal crossing revolvers on the front and a heavy chrome barrel topper. This relationship is likely drawn from the fact that both collections are inspired by historical figures from the United States’ Wild West era. Wyatt Earp was an “American lawman and gambler” who lived from 1848 - 1929. Earp danced between the two sides of the law, moving from boom town to boom town. At one point in Earp’s travels, he was part of a federal posse formed alongside Doc Holliday.
Wyatt Earp American Single Malt is denoted as a limited series on World Whiskey Society’s website. It includes Small Batch, which is bottled at 96 proof, and Barrel Proof, which is bottled as single barrels with varying proof points ranging from approximately 120-135. Both whiskeys were distilled in Oklahoma, though the source of distillation is not disclosed.
Filled with dark fruit flavors, with ripe plum most prominent along with dark cherry and black raspberry as complementary flavors, Wyatt Earp Barrel Proof is a unique tasting American single malt whiskey. It shares very similar underlying flavors with its lower proof, small batch counterpart, however while it still drinks lower than its proof suggests, Barrel Proof dials up the intensity just enough to pull in some heat and, despite being made from 100% malted barley, some spice notes. This makes for a memorable pour that amplifies the warmth and spice for this Oklahoma sourced single malt, though the increased heat does hide some of the flavor intensity behind a more evident wall of heat compared to its small batch counterpart. As this is a single barrel release, exact flavor profile and proof will vary from barrel to barrel.
The whiskey in review is from barrel 3B and is bottled number 24 of 245.
