Another 6 months in the barrels helps tease out rich sweet flavors, however Extra Extra Old shows that this experiment may be butting up against the maximum amount of time to continue to age Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whiskey.
The latest release in the Old Forester 117 Series, Extra Extra Old is the follow-up to the brand’s Old Forester 117 Series Extra Old release. Where the Extra Old release saw the company taking the standard 1910 Old Fine Whiskey and aging it for an extra 18 months in a secondary barrel, Extra Extra Old ups the ante and ages 1910 Old Fine Whiskey for an additional 24 months in second barrel. This is the first release from the new Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift, who states in the press release that "This expression was born from a creative and innovative experiment while staying true to the classic taste which sets Old Forester apart. Although I only joined Old Forester last month, this was one of the first new limited expressions I was honored to taste – and the extra long double barreling leads to an explosion of flavors."
Much like Old Forester 117 Extra Old, The first thing you notice with Old Forester 117 Extra Extra is its dark color which was clearly influenced by its extended time in the barrel. The sip opens with rich and inviting aromas that are composed of heavy sweet scents. The midpoint is full of sweeter notes that mingle really well with aged oak and leather notes that provide nice balance. It ends with a slight sweetness that is quickly overpowered by a rye spice along with bold aged dry notes that make their presence known and dominate. Compared to Extra Old, Extra Extra Old is more successful pulling out richer flavor notes in the nose and palate, however, the extra 6 months in the barrel ends up delivering a mouth-sucking finish that is just a tad too dry. Overall, Extra Extra Old is a fun experiment of how continuous aging impacts the 1910 Old Fine Whiskey, however, it may be approaching its natural conclusion before it becomes over-oaked.
