Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Bourbon is a semi-annual release of various aged bourbons. For the spring 2022 release, Heaven Hill chose to release their oldest bourbon yet for the brand: an impressive 17 year old bourbon. The brand tends to see more ups and downs than other Heaven Hill limited releases, and struggles to reach the heights other brands’ limited releases tend to hit, including their own Parker’s Heritage Collection. While never downright flawed, releases can leave you at times with the feeling of disappointment with the amount of expectations that come with each release. Maybe that’s why Heaven Hill finally decided to dig deep into their rickhouse and pull out some truly impressive 17 year old barrels this year.
The nose starts off with a deliciously sweet and fruity aroma. Full of rich red fruits, sweet vanilla, and aged oak, it's an infectious aroma that's hard to resist. The palate reciprocates this, with additional notes of cherry, while adding in strawberry jam, fig, and french vanilla ice cream. It tastes just as good as it sounds. With more aged oak on the finish nicely emphasizing the whiskey’s age, this bourbon manages to further add in notes of butterscotch, leather, and cigar box. With each part of the sip able to stand out on its own, taken as a whole, Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Bourbon Spring 2022 Edition will be hard to top in 2022. Combine this with the recently released Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 17 Year Old Barrel Proof Bourbon, and Heaven Hill is on a tear so far in 2022.
