An inoffensive, sweet tasting bourbon that is underdeveloped in parts but remains a light and easy sipper.
Motherwell Distilling Co. was founded in 2022 and is located in Logan, Ohio. As the company’s name suggests (though that isn’t always a given nowadays), they distill their own whiskeys. According to their website, the company’s name comes from “Motherwell Iron & Steel Co. [who] played a pivotal role in the remarkable transformation of Logan, Ohio, from a quaint town into a thriving city.” Their label states that it was “Distilled, blended, and bottled by Motherwell Distilling Company,” but it also says a portion of the blend is produced by a farm-to-bottle distillery in Illinois.
The bourbon opens with a light aroma of toffee, honey, grain, Cheerios, and mellow oak that is unassuming but effective nevertheless. The palate skews light and sweet, with honey, Golden Grahams cereal, and roasted nuts providing the majority of its flavor profile. The finish is also on the simple side but pleasant, with a dash of cinnamon, sweet pastry bread, and toasted oak. Given the timeframe when Motherwell Distilling Co. opened, this whiskey tastes young and underdeveloped, but its sweet light flavors and lack of graininess result in an enjoyable sipper. It’s priced accordingly, and thanks to its breakfast cereal flavors, most should enjoy what they sip.
