Living up to its name, Lost Lantern Brooklyn Bakery is full of rich bakery flavors and highlights why Kings County Distillery will have you second-guessing what you used to believe about 15-gallon barrels.
According to the company’s press release, Lost Lantern’s latest batch Winter Whiskey includes four whiskeys in total, that comprise of Blend Series (blends of whiskeys from multiple distilleries) and the Single Distillery Series (blends of multiple casks from a single distillery) releases. This particular bourbon is a blend of 8 barrels of 5 and 6 year old bourbons from Kings County Distillery out of Brooklyn, New York. While the distillery has slowly started utilizing more 30 and 53 gallon barrels in their releases, the barrels used in this blend were 15 gallons in size.
The first noticeable trait with Lost Lantern Brooklyn Bakery is how dark this bourbon is for its age, most likely being credited to the 15 gallon barrels that were used in this blend. The next trait is how much the proof influences the outcome of this pour. It helps to ramp up the baking scents found in the nose while also making sure you know that it’s a 133 proof bourbon at all times. The midpoint brings about sweeter notes of honey, brown sugar, and molasses, along with a hearty dose of spicy notes thanks to its cinnamon spice and Red Hot candy components. The spice takes the lead and ramps up further in the finish, with a burst of cinnamon and baking spices exploding at the forefront. Intriguing notes of cherry turnover and flaky baked dough make appearances, but it’s the spice mix that will leave a lasting impression. This is a fine blend by Lost Lantern and very nicely highlights the magic that Kings County Distillery is able to work with 15 gallon barrels.
The barrels chosen for this release produced a total of 396 bottles.
